Can You Smoke E-Hookahs in Restaurants, Planes and Other Public Places?

Untitled-1

One of the things that people who pick up electronic hookahs wonder is whether or not they can smoke them on airplanes and other areas where smoking is restricted.

The good news is that you can take these devices on an airplane, but you cannot light them up – so to speak, obviously, you don’t light anything – on an airplane. It is simply not allowed. You can board with them, however, according to the TSA.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to travelers. After all, part of the reason that cigarettes are banned on airplanes is that everybody is in an enclosed space and anybody with respiratory issues which may be aggravated by any type of smoke or vapor may be on the plane and may be at risk.

Restaurants

This really comes down to the jurisdiction in which you live and the policies of the restaurant in question. Generally speaking, most restaurants are not going to allow you to smoke any electronic cigarette if they don’t allow you to smoke a regular cigarette. Given that many municipalities have outright bans on smoking, you probably will not be able to light up any electronic hookahs in a restaurant.

The one exception may be bars and taverns. Because people generally do like to have nicotine with their alcohol, these establishments will sometimes allow people to light up an electronic hookah, any electronic cigarette or another electronic smoking device, as long as they aren’t lighting up any tobacco, which is also banned in many jurisdictions.

Always Ask

The best policy with any of these questions is to ask the venue in which you want to have any electronic hookah. While it may be permissible under the law, the specific venue may simply not allow people to smoke electronic devices, not wanting to make regular tobacco smokers feel left out.

Additionally, in some venues – such as nightclubs – it may be difficult for security personnel to differentiate between electronic cigarettes and regular cigarettes at a distance– the same applies to hookahs – so they very well may restrict smoking anything electronic just as they restrict smoking anything tobacco-based.
